University of Alaska Museum of the North, Fairbanks Alaska

Joan Soranno with GDM/HGA designed the new wing of the Museum of the North at UAF in Fairbanks, Alaska. It opened in 2005. The soft yet shifting white planes evoke the glaciers of the state that cut through the landscape, as well as the powerful 1964 earthquake that left an indelible mark in the people's memories.

Custom aluminum cladding shifts colorful shades as the light changes during the seasons and times of day. The two story front lobby opens to specific galleries of native and Alaskan art.
